How to remove pet hair from your carpet?

Pet hair can be extremely difficult and frustrating to remove.

Here are 3 steps to help remove the most pet hair from your carpet .

  1. Carpet Rake

  • A carpet rake will help loosen the pet hair from your carpet with the least amount of energy.

  • Simply rake the carpet back and forth and pet hair will begin to attach to the bristles of the carpet rake.

  • I would recommend the carpet rake with the black brush (left side) for delicate fibres such as wool carpet and the bristle brush (right side) for synthetic carpets.

I have attached links if you would like to buy either of the carpet rakes.

It will also straighten the carpets face fibres leaving your carpet ready for vacuuming.

Spend 1-2 minutes raking each room.

When you have finished raking the carpet clean the carpet bristles with the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner or a microfibre towel.

2. Vacuum

Vacuum your carpet preferably with a vacuum that has a rotating brush.

Vacuum brands such as

These vacuums work great for removing pet hair deep down in your carpet.

If your vacuum does not have a rotating brush just spend a little more time raking the carpet to loosen the pet hair. This will still remove a large amount of pet hair however it will not be equal to a rotating brush vacuum. If you have plenty of carpet in your home and pets I would recommend buying one of the above vacuums.

Being thorough is key when vacuuming up pet hair. Take your time and spend 3-5 minutes vacuuming each carpeted room.

  • Pay special attention to the main traffic areas and your pet’s favourite spots on the carpet.

  • I would highly recommend going over the main traffic areas 2-3 times for maximum pet hair removal.

Always vacuum the edges of your carpet. You would be shocked how much pet hair get trapped along the edges and underneath the skirting boards.

If you want to go the extra mile dampen a microfibre towel and wipe along the skirting boards after vacuuming each room.

Pro Tip:

Purchase an odor block ( bagged vacuums only)

  • You can place an odor block inside your vacuum just next to the vacuum bag but not inside it.

  • They smell amazing and only cost $10

This will disperse a lovely scent when vacuuming. Odor blocks come in a number of fragrances such as cherry and lemon.

With any vacuum you must clean the filters regularly. I would suggest every 3-4 months and replace the filters every 12 months.

If you do not clean and replace the filters the vacuum will begin to smell. The commercial vacuums we use on a daily basis begin to smell after 4 weeks if we do not clean and replace the filters often. However you do not need to do it that often as we are vacuuming several homes per day.

I would recommend cleaning the inside of your vacuum attachments such as the crevice and stair tool. Pet hair and oils can build up inside the attachments which will also contribute to the bad odour coming from your vacuum.

3. Brass brush

  • This is the most effective way to remove any leftover pet hair that the carpet raking and vacuuming did not remove. It is fantastic at removing fine dog and cat hairs.

  • You will need to get on your hands and knees and brush the carpet in one direction with the brass brush. The pet hair will stick to the brush bristles.

Once there is a large clump of hair stuck to the brush bristles remove it and begin brushing the carpet again until you see no more pet hair attached.

Be gentle brushing the carpet. If you go too fast you could damage the carpet fibre.
