How to get dried dog pee out of carpet?

remove-dog-urine-smell.jpg

Removing dried dog urine from your carpet is much more difficult than fresh urine.

.

You will need:

  1. Gloves

  2. Enzyme based urine treatment

Enzyme Wizard urine and stain remover

  3. Microfibre or paper towel

If you have heavy amounts of dog or cat urine you can purchase a commercial grade product Unduzit for $67

5 Steps to removing dried pet urine from you carpet

  1. Moisten the pet pee stain with a microfibre/paper towel or sponge.
This will soften the stain so that the enzyme can go to work faster.

(Don't forget that pet stains are usually twice the size underneath the carpet)

  2. Spray the dog urine stain with the urine product. The larger the stain the more product you will need to apply. Please don't go overboard. Applying to much urine treatment can over wet the carpet causing browning.

  3. Apply some downward pressure to the area you have sprayed the urine treatment.
Pressing down firmly or standing on top of the microfibre towel will help push the product deeper into the carpet and underlay.

  4. If you applied enzyme wizard urine and odour treatment, let it dwell for 10 minutes.

  5. After 10 minutes blot the area to remove any excess product.

How quickly will we see the results?

It doesn’t happen overnight. A biological process takes time. Enzymes are not an instant answer, but are the lasting answer.

For how long are enzymes active?

Enzymes remain active for seven to ten days. After this time, the product will biodegrade and the residue will consist of carbon dioxide and water.

Is it safe to use around children and animals?

The product is safe for humans, animals and plant life as it contains no harmful chemicals. It is developed entirely from natural products found in our environment.

What is the difference between fresh and old dog urine?

Fresh dog urine has a PH of 5-6 which is acidic.

It is much easier to remove when the urine is fresh.

When old dog urine dries it turns alkaline and the PH is between 10-12. The high PH can cause permanent staining especially on natural fibres such as wool carpet.

Old dried dog urine is easier to smell in the warmer humid months. This is because the urine salts attract moisture.

When dried urine salts attract moisture in the humid months or moisture is applied to the urine stain it gives off an ammonia gas.

P.S I would always recommend keeping your home well ventilated when treating urine stains.

How do I find dog urine in my carpet?

What you will need:

I have used both of these products on 100s of dog urine removal jobs and they do a fantastic job.

I understand the UV light is expensive but please don’t purchase a UV light under $50 as they’re not powerful enough to spot urine in carpet.

If budget is a concern , you can get away with just using a moisture meter for finding dog urine.

  1. Darken the room and inspect carpet with the UV light. Urine will glow under the UV light.

  2. If the UV light is not locating any pet stains you will need to inspect using your moisture meter.
(I find the UV light does not work well on plush pile or dark carpets)

  3. Turn on the digital moisture meter and insert the probes into the carpet. Generally urine will be between 12-30 percent moisture. The higher the percentage of moisture the worse the urine stain.

For example if a small dog has been urinating on one area several times it may read between 10 - 15 percent. If you have a large dog and it has been going back to the same area on many occasions it will most likely read between 20-30 percent.

*Pay attention to the moisture in the room before you insert it into the carpet. On a dry day the moisture in the air will be low (2 - 6 percent) and on a humid day up to 12 percent. If the moisture meter is reading 10 percent and the area of carpet you inspected is 10 percent there is most likely no urine salts in the carpet.

Why does dried pet urine damage wool carpet?

Please see below an extract from actichem - A comprehensive guide to urine decontamination

When dog or cat urine dries it typically has a PH of 11.

This highly alkaline pH is damaging to both the wool fibre and the wool dye bonds. Wool is dyed in an acid medium and alkalinity weakens the dye bonds. This is one of the reasons carpet professionals rinse the wool carpet with an acid rinse rather than just plain water. It ensures that the carpet is left in a slightly acidic state.

With the wool carpet fibres being in contact with the urine contamination over an extended period, the dye bonds are significantly weakened. However, the dye stays in place and the carpet colour does not necessarily change.

When a cleaning process takes place to clean the carpet or remove  the stain the dye bonds are too weak to retain the colour and the dye is flush away with the soiling and a bleached area appears.

It is important to note that the bleached appearance is as a result of the urine not the cleaning process.

What cleaning product should I use to clean up dried dog pee from wool carpet?

From my experience most supermarket carpet cleaning spotters will damage wool carpet. If you have wool carpet in your home you must apply a wool safe cleaning solution otherwise you risk permanently damaging the carpet fibre. Just look for the wool safe logo on the bottle.

Just last week a customer tried to remove several large dog urine stains from her wool carpet with a supermarket product. When I inspected the carpet you could see two large white spots, each the size of a basketball. As soon as I began cleaning the carpet and extracting the white residue the colour was completely removed from the carpet in both those areas.
