How can I remove dog urine odour from carpet?

  1. Locate the dog urine . If you are not sure where the dog urine is, you can purchase a UV light online. Simply darken the rooms as much as possible and then inspect the carpet with a UV light. The dog urine will glow under the UV light.

(skip this step if you actually saw your dog pee!)

  2. Place down paper towels or microfiber towels to absorb the dog urine. Blot the pet stain with your towels. Please do not rub the carpet as this can distort the fibre.

  3. If you have a shop vac on hand extract the urine from the carpet before using paper towels. Do not use a vacuum cleaner as you will damage the motor.

  4. Place a heavy item on top of the towels. This will help absorb more of the dog urine. Heavy items - we recommend that you do not use an item that is valuable to you as it may absorb some of the urine.

  5. Replace the towels several times depending on the size of the stain. The larger the dog urine stain the more towels you will need.

  6. After replacing several towels, place down a new fresh clean towel on the urine stain. Then put the heavy item on top of the towel and leave for 1 hour. This step is crucial as a large portion of the dog urine will be in the backing of the carpet.

  7. In a spray bottle bottle mix 50 % water and 50% distilled vinegar.  Spray the vinegar mix over the pet stain.  Blot the pet stain until it’s only lightly damp. Over wetting the carpet can cause browning. (brown ring around the stain)

  8. Pro Tip: Mist the urine stain with 3% hydrogen peroxide. You can purchase 3% hydrogen peroxide from most chemists for under $10. Be very careful when applying to natural fibres such as wool or cotton. Never apply anything stronger than 3% unless you are a trained professional.

If your dog has been urinating on the same area several times it may need to be professionally cleaned by a urine odour specialist.  The faster you treat the stain the higher the chance you have to remove it
