How long does professional carpet cleaning take?

The short answer is between 30 - 45 minutes per room

It does of course depend on the:

  1. Size of your home

  2. Type of carpet you have

  3. Pet stains and odours

  4. Condition of carpet - light to heavily soiled

A large living room could easily take over 1 hour to professionally clean.

Over the years I have cleaned many living rooms the size of tennis courts. This is why the size of the room is the biggest factor in determining how long it will take to professionally clean. This may seem very confusing.

How long will it take to clean my home?

  1. Size of your home

To make it easier to understand, here are three examples of homes we have cleaned.

Small Home

  • 2 bedrooms

  • Living room

Time taken: 2 hours

Medium Home

  • 4 bedrooms

  • Living room

  • Dining room

  • Pet stains in 1 bedroom

Time taken: 3.5 hours

Large Home

  • 6 bedrooms

  • Large living room

  • Theatre room

  • Staircase

Time taken: 6 hours

A bedroom with pet stains can take up to 3 times longer to clean than a regular deep clean of a bedroom.

The larger the rooms the more time it takes to clean the carpet.

2. Type of carpet you have

Does it take longer to clean wool carpet?

Yes, wool carpet does take more time to be professionally carpet cleaned as I need to be extra careful when cleaning a natural fibre. When I clean wool carpet, I do extra dry strokes and place down commercial fans to speed up the drying process.

Only wool safe approved cleaning solutions can be applied to the natural fibre. High heat is excellent for cleaning carpet and helps speed up the cleaning process.

High heat is fantastic at cutting through grease and soil on synthetic carpets, however high heat or strong cleaning solutions cannot be used on wool carpets.

If high heat is used to clean your wool carpet it can leave streaks on your carpet. This can be removed if you have your carpet re cleaned at a low heat followed by carpet grooming to set the pile.

3. Pet stains and odours

How long does it take to remove pet urine from carpet?

Our pet treatment stage 1 (up to 6 urine stains)  takes approximately 60 minutes to clean a room.

Our pet treatment stage 2  (restoration clean) can take up to 2 hours per room.

Treating pet stains takes time. For the best possible result urine treatment needs 30 - 60 minutes dwell time. Simply cleaning the top of the carpet will do next to nothing in removing pet odours.

Pet odours need to be extracted from deep down in the carpet fibre, backing and underlay.

4. Condition of carpet - light to heavily soiled

Does it take longer to clean heavily soiled and stained carpet?

Yes , it also takes longer for the carpet to dry as well. For maximum soil extraction I will need to clean the same area several times.

Well maintained or lightly soiled carpet needs less

  • Pre conditioner

  • Extraction

Less is more. By no means are we rushing the job. It just does not need the same level of soil extraction.

Just like when you wash your clothes. If your children have been playing in the mud their clothes will need to be scrubbed and soaked. Whereas with reasonably clean clothes, a gentle wash will be fine.

This is why it’s critical to maintain your carpet by having it professionally cleaned every 12 months

Maintenance is very important. Car manufacturers and mechanics recommend you service your car every 12 months. The longer you leave it, the more damage occurs. The same can be said for maintaining your carpet. It might look fine but you would be amazed how much soil a carpet can hold before it begins to look dirty.

By having your carpet regularly maintained it will extend the life of your carpet.
